Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A new method that combines isomerization with other reactions has been shown to produce a family of isomeric materials. The chemistry involves the addition of a phosphorous-containing group to produce dibutyl-phosphono-octadecanoates. A low level of [Ru(CO)2(EtCO2)]n is first used for the isomerization of methyl 9-cis-octadecenoate (methyl oleate). The isomerized material serves as the starting material in the previously developed follow-up chemistry leading to the production of a new family of products. This new method is only a demonstration of a promising approach, which should be applicable to many chemistries beyond these directly covered here. Because the resultant material has incorporation of the phosphorous-containing group in different places along the chain, increased disruption of crystallization will occur leading to low pour points and cloud points of the product, a current problem in bio-based lubricants. Overall, this technology is another step on the road to valuable industrial materials from agriculture.
