Interpretive Summary: A virus was detected in Florida tomato plants with necrosis of leaves, petioles and stems, and necrotic rings or spots on fruits, beginning in October 2013. A variety of diagnostic tests failed to detect any common virus previously known to infect tomato. A novel ilarvirus was found that was most closely related to, but distinct from, Tulare apple mosaic virus. The name Tomato necrotic streak virus (TomNSV) is proposed for this new species.

Technical Abstract: A novel ilarvirus for which the name Tomato necrotic streak virus (TomNSV) is proposed was detected in Florida tomato plants beginning in October 2013. Symptoms including necrosis of leaves, petioles and stems, and necrotic rings or spots on fruits were observed. This report provides an overview of this emerging virus for growers, extension workers, crop consultants and research and regulatory scientists.
