Title: REINVESTIGATION OF THE SOLANUM CHACOENSE/S. MICRODONTUM HYBRIDIZATION HYPOTHESIS

Technical Abstract: Solanum chacoense is a highly variable wild potato species widely distributed from central Bolivia to central Argentina, from sea level to over 3000 m in the Andes Mountains. Hawkes (1962) proposed that S. chacoense originally was confined to the low plains, but the upland populations of this species arose from introgression with S. microdontum. Our study uses morphological and single- to low- copy RFLP data to reinvestigate this hypothesis. Neither data set supports the introgression hypothesis.
