Interpretive Summary: In this chapter I describe analytical methods for determination of alkaline earth metals. These elements including Ca and Mg constitute an important component of the soil solid phase and dissolved cations. The analytical methods are divided into methods for solid analysis and for the elements in solution. Both instrumental methods, such as atomic absorption, inductively coupled plasma emission, ion chromatography and wet chemical methods such as titration and coloerimetric are described.

Technical Abstract: Analytical methods are presented for alkaline earth elements. Total analysis is described using various digestion methods, x- ray fluorescence and by injection of fine solids into ICP. Procedures are described for analysis of soluble salts by flame atomic absorption, thermal ionization atomic absorption, ICP, flame emission photometry, ion chromatography and titrimetric methods. Colorimetric methods are presented for Be. Procedures are also described for analysis of exchangeable cation in calcareous and gypsiferous soils.
