Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Microorganisms impact our lives as pathogens, transformers of organic and inorganic compounds in the environment, and as biocatalysts for production of antibiotics, industrial chemicals and foods. Different regulations and ethical considerations are encountered when protecting and distributing each of these groups of organisms. The discussion presented will focus on three areas: 1) Patent protection of economically important microorganisms under the Budapest Treaty; 2) Impact of APHIS regulations on strain distribution; 3) Availability of microbial germplasm following disclosure in the scientific literature
