Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Increased water content reduces soil strength often measured as cone index. Field variation of water content obscures the comparison of strength values. Correction of strength data to a single water content would assist researchers in interpretation of differences among tillage or management treatments. Data from several experiments were merged to relate strength and water content. Automated curve fitting and surface fitting programs were used to match mathematical relationships to empirical results. Relationships were developed between soil strength and water content and among soil strength, water content, bulk density, and depth. Use of the equations in correction of strength values is discussed.
