Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Brucellae are gram-negative bacteria pathogenic to several economically important animals and to man. The six reported species of Brucella are nearly identical by RFLP maping. Current bacteriological methods for identification of the Brucella species require at least a week to perform. Previously we described a repetitive element, IS711, which is unique to the genus Brucella. We have developed a PCR assay which identified Brucella species based on the differential distribution of IS711 copies in each genome.
