The six reported species of Brucella are nearly identical by RFLP maping. Current bacteriological methods for identification of the Brucella species require at least a week to perform. Previously we described a repetitive element, IS711, which is unique to the genus Brucella. We have developed a PCR assay which identified Brucella species based on the differential distribution of IS711 copies in each genome. |
