Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: TDR has been used to nondestructively and simultaneously monitor soil water content and bulk soil electrical conductivity during steady state solute transport. Our objective is to evaluate the use of TDR for measuring water and solute transport under transient flow conditions. Transient and steady state solute transport was measured in the laboratory on intact soil cores and 0.3 m soil blocks using TDR. TDR measurements were made at multiple depths using probes installed horizontally. Breakthrough curves measured using TDR were compared with those obtained from Cl- concentration and electrical conductivity of effluent fractions. The effect of column depth on TDR measured breakthrough curves will be discussed.
