Technical Abstract: Inoculation of chickens with serotype 2 Marek's disease virus (MDV-2) has been shown to augment the development of avian leukosis virus (ALV)-induced lymphomas. In this study, we examined the ALV proviral-cmyc junction fragments of both pre-neoplastic lesions and tumors for evidence of the clonal origin. The number of independent transformation events was similar in both MDV+ and MDV-. The increased numbers of lesions in the MDV-2 inoculated chickens appeared to be due to the metastasis of a single clone of transformed B cells. Thus, the mechanism of MDV-2 augmentation is likely to involve factors that enhance tumor progression and not tumor induction.
