Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Fusarium systematics and phylogeny are being investigated by parsimony analysis of DNA sequences from multiple loci. The Fusarium DNA sequence database is being expanded continuously in order to investigate species boundaries, to construct a phylogenetic classification of Fusarium and its teleomorphs, and to develop molecular tools for the rapid and accurate identification of all fusaria. Molecular identification of the trichothecene-producing isolate Fn-2B is given as an example of the utility of the Fusarium database. In addition, species concepts and phylogenetic relationships within the Gibberella fujikuroi complex of Fusarium are discussed based on the results of studies that have attempted to infer relationships of species within this complex from genotypic data such as DNA-DNA hybridization, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), isozyme polymorphisms, and DNA sequences.
