Technical Abstract: Kenaf seeds are often overlooked when considering the uses of kenaf plants, a fiber and feed crop. The purpose of this research was to determine the chemical composition of kenaf seeds from nine varieties. Kenaf seeds contained a range of oils, fatty acids, phospholipids and sterols. Differences occurred in percentage composition among the nine kenaf varieties. The high seed oil content and its similarity to cottonseed oil suggests that kenaf seed oil may be used as an edible oil. Differences in seed composition among varieties indicated the potential for genetic improvement. This research further suggests that kenaf seed may meet renewable industrial and nutritional uses within the United States.
