Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The goal of this research was to prepare sheetfed and heat-set web offset ink vehicles in the absence of petroleum products. Heat bodied vegetable oil was mixed with monoester of an unsaturated fatty acid or a blend of unsaturated fatty acid monoesters. In the formulation of the vehicle, non-heat bodied vegetable oil was used as a third component. Esters were incorporated at a relatively low level, that is, on the order of about 0.5 to 3.0% by weight of the vehicle. Heat bodied and nonheat bodied oil did constitute the major fraction of the vehicle, and thereby primarily responsible for the rheological properties of the formulated ink. Vehicles were tested for the physical properties (i.e., viscosity, tack, drying time) and the results were comparable to conventional mineral oil based vehicles.
