Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Species of Aphanocladium, Sibirina and Verticimonosporium are phialidic hyphomycetes that produce only single conidia from a conidiogenous locus. Hypomyces anamorphs formerly classified in Sibirina were merged by Rogerson & Samuels with Cladobotryum. A group of isolates obtained by M. Christensen from soil of native Artemisia tridentata (sagebush) grassland in Wyoming and by S. Abdullah from desert soil in Iraq is compared to these genera and classified as a fourth genus, Stanjemonium W. Gams & Schroers n. gen, honoring Stan J. Hughes. The four newly described species of Stanjemonium form a strongly supported clade with Emericellopsis, a genus traditionally classified within the Eurotiales that only recently has been shown to have hypocrealean affinities (Glenn et al. 1996). Phylogenetic analyses indicate that the type species of Aphanocladium, A. album, is nested within the Nectria-Hypocrea clade of the Hypocreales along with Cladobotryum obclavatum (teleomorph = Hypomyces sp.) and Verticimonosporium spp. Numerous conidiogenous cells or denticles are scattered along the cells of aerial hyphae in Aphanocladium and Stanjemonium, very rapidly collapsing in the former, somewhat more persistent in the latter. In Cladobotryum-Sibirina and Verticimonosporium, conidiogenous cells are discrete in terminal and intercalary whorls in which phialides of the latter are particularly swollen. Newly described species of Aphanocladium W. Gams and Verticimonosporium Matsushima are discussed.
