Technical Abstract: Changes are planned for the USDA-DHIA genetic evaluation system to improve the accuracy of evaluations and to respond to changes in milk recording. A test-day model will allow appropriate weightings for all possible combinations of intervals between tests, data from unsupervised test plans, and data without component information. More accurate evaluations also will reduce fluctuations in bull evaluations over time due to differences in persistency and maturity rate. Genetic evaluations from the test-day model will be expressed as an index of evaluations for individual lactation stages of first and later lactations. Use of the Web to receive data and distribute genetic evaluations and related information will increase. Improvements in evaluations, timeliness, and dissemination will help retain the global competitiveness of U.S. genetics.
