Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Twenty-six sugarbeet breeding lines segregating for single gene rhizomania resistance in a smooth root progenitor germplasm were evaluated for agronomic characteristics. Recoverable white sugar per acre (RWSA) was similar for all RM lines and was equivalent to the check varieties. A significant range of sucrose concentrations (14.8% - 15.8%) was observed, however higher yield (tons/acre) of the RM lines contributed to the observed non-significant RWSA values. Where available, data suggests that some RM lines are equivalent to USH20 in disease reaction to Rhizoctonia and Cercospora. Rhizomania scores as determined in Salinas, CA indicated some RM lines may carry the gene for resistance.
