Title: Ribotyping of B. Bronchiseptica Isolates from Hungary

Technical Abstract: In a previous study, 113 isolates of Bordetella bronchiseptica, from 11 different host species worldwide, were differentiated into 16 ribotypes. A significant association was demonstrated between swine isolates and ribotype 3. Here we report the ribotype of an additional 107 B. bronchiseptica isolates from 3 different host species in Hungary. Fifty-nine were obtained from swine, 46 from rabbits, and 2 from dogs. Approximately 97% (57) of the swine isolates are ribotype 3, as compared to 89% of 33 isolates in our previous study. One of the remaining swine isolates defines a novel ribotype, designated 18, and contains a fragment not previously detected in any other ribotype. Roughly 83% of the rabbit isolates (38) are ribotype 3, compared to 35% in our previous study. Two novel ribotypes were identified from the remaining Hungarian rabbit isolates, each containing one or more novel fragments. The two canine isolates examined were found to be ribotypes 8 and 9. These types were not identified previously in 27 canine isolates from the United States and Europe. These results strengthen the association between swine isolates and ribotype 3; however, they also suggest that this ribotype is more commonly shared with rabbits in Hungary than in other regions of the world. The identification of several novel ribotypes from the strains examined here indicates that even greater heterogeneity exists within B. bronchiseptica isolates than was previously thought and further strengthens the utility of ribotyping for epidemiologic studies.
