Title: YIELD RESPONSE OF SUBIRRIGATED SOYBEANS AND CORN TO A FLUCTUATING WATER TABLE AND SUPPLEMENTAL NITROGEN

Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Using subirrigation/drainage research facilities at Wooster, OH and Hoytville, OH, the effect of adding nitrogen to the subirrigation water and the effect of a fluctuating versus constant water table on corn and soybean yields were examined for 3 years (1995-97). At Wooster, the 1995 nitrogen treatment consisted of 30 lbs N/A (as a NH4NO3 solution dripped into the subirrigation stream) applied weekly beginning June 15 until maturity. In 1996 and 1997, Urea plus Agrotain was used at 20 lbs N/A weekly. The check treatment consisted of no N on the soybeans and 300 lbs N/A on the corn. Results from these studies indicated no significant yield increase from the N treatment, in either the corn or the soybeans. At Hoytville, the effect of a constant water table versus a fluctuating water table on corn and soybean yields was compared to a drainage only treatment. Both water table treatments significantly increased corn and soybean yields over the drainage only treatment, but there was no significant difference between these 2 treatments.
