Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Turkey coryza, caused by infection with Bordetella avium, is associated with vaccinal failure well into the convalescent phase of the disease, perhaps due to immunosuppression. In this study, mice were injected with a heat-labile dermonecrotic toxin (DNT) purified from B. avium. The toxin was lethal within 24 hours at doses greater than 5 ng. Lesions ascribed to olethality were not seen; however, multifocal necrosis in primary and secondary lymphoid organs was a consistent microscopic lesion. Results of this study indicate that the immunosuppression seen in turkeys with coryza may be mediated by the B. avium DNT.
