Technical Abstract: In this review we describe the means to establish a presumptive and confirmed (laboratory) diagnosis of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome. Topics addressed are herd records, clinical signs, lesions, sample selection, and laboratory tests used for presumptively identifying viral strains and for detecting antibody, viral antigen, viral nucleic acid, and infectious virus.
