Technical Abstract: Soybeans are an important source of dietary protein, especially for livestock feed. Accordingly, an ongoing effort is being made to improve the functional and nutritional properties of these proteins. To achieve this goal, it will be necessary to understand the basic biological events involved in the synthesis of these proteins. Recently it has become evident that certain of the seed storage proteins require modification after they are made so that they can assemble properly within the seed. Our efforts have begun to characterize the protease enzymes in the seed that are potentially responsible for these modifications. In this report we describe the nucleotide sequence of DNA encoding such a protease. It is a new member of the subtilisin family of proteases that appears early during seed development. The information contained within this report is targeted to specialists who work in the area of seed development.
