Title: Diversity at Our Doorstep and Its Use in Enhancement for Cold Chipping and Resistance to Lite Blight

Technical Abstract: Development of 4x Cold Chipping Clones via 4x-2x Breeding. Selected 2x(2EBN) accessions were crossed with haploids. 4x progeny were generated via 4x-2x crosses. None of the 4x progeny chipped acceptably direct from 36 degrees F storage. A higher frequency of clones performed better after two weeks reconditioning. Of 1001 entries tested in unsprayed plots at Hancock, 31 (3 percent) exhibited resistance. The highest percentage of resistant progeny were from families where both parents were resistant. Excellent resistance was noted among S. verrucosum hybrids. Late Blight Resistance in Mexican 2x(1EBN) Wild Potato Species. Eight S. cardiophyllum-S. pinnatisectum F1 progeny segregated 1:1, resistant to susceptible. The BC1 segregated 42:57, resistant to susceptible. The simple segregation ratio suggests a single dominant gene. Linkage was found between the resistant locus and markers on chromosome 7. Crossability of the S. pinnatisectum-Tuberosum Haploid Hybrid 461. The hybrid 461 is male and female sterile. Extensive crossing has been demonstrated usable female fertile. Breeding Method to Transfer Germplasm in Mexican Species. Hybrids have been generated using S. verrucosum as a bridge species. The 2x(1EBN) hybrids have been successfully crossed with 2x(2EBN) species, a haploid, 2x(1EBN) species and 4x(4EBN) cultivars. A potentially effective means has been found to open the 2x(1EBN) genepool to exploitation for potato improvement.
