We are characterizing the inheritance of late-blight resistance from S. pinnatisectum and attempting to transfer this resistance to the cultivated potato. Interspecific hybrids between haploid S. tuberosum [2x(2 EBN)] plants and S. pinnatisectum were resistant to an A2/US8 strain of the late-blight fungus, but were highly sterile. Interspecific hybrids were generated among plants of S. pinnatisectum (late-blight resistant) and S. cardiophyllum (late-blight susceptible). Resistant hybrid progenies were backcrossed to susceptible S. cardiophyllum plants to generate segregating families. Adequate numbers of RFLPs exist in these families to assign putative late-blight resistance loci to chromosome arms and compare their location to previously mapped late-blight resistance loci. |
