Interpretive Summary: Two yeasts were studied, but conventional identification procedures using growth tests failed to give a clear answer to their identity. Species-specific genes (genetic material, DNA) were sequenced, which showed that the yeasts represent two new species. Knowledge of these new species adds to our understanding of biodiversity. Additionally, one of the new species is closely related to clinically important species, so an awareness of this species is important for development of diagnostic tests for the pathogenic species.

Technical Abstract: Candida germanica (type strain NRRL Y-27064, CBS 4105) and Candida neerlandica (type strain NRRL Y-27057, CBS 434), two new anamorphic ascomycetous yeasts, are described. The species were isolated, respectively, from the atmosphere over Germany and from pressed yeast cake in The Netherlands. Phylogenetic analysis of 26S domain D1/D2 ribosomal DNA sequences places C. germanica near Pichia philogaea, whereas C. neerlandica is a member of the Lodderomyces elongisporus/Candida albicans clade.
