Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This study identified and molecularly tagged 20 genes affecting seedling vigor under various growing conditions relevant to the southern US. Of particular interest are two genes, one from Teqing and one from Lemont, that in combination result in progeny having mesocotyls up to four times longer than those of current US semidwarf varieties. Varieties with longer mesocotyls are more suitable for planting deeply as is often required when planting to moisture.
