Interpretive Summary: The mission of culture collections is the preservation and distribution of microbes for use by science, industry, health, and agriculture. To accomplish this mission, certain standard procedures must be followed during preservation and storage, so as to avoid deterioration of viability, genetic change or contamination in the stored organism. Established codes regulate how the organisms are named, and specific regulations & procedures pertain to quality control of the preserved living material. Use of specified microbial strains in quality control is mandated by several organizations, whose names are provided to the reader. Names and locations of the major culture collections world wide are also listed. Technical Abstract: Specific procedures for cryopreservation of microbial germplasm are outlined and documented, with special emphasis on protocols for bacteria and fungi. Types, Ex-types, Authentic Cultures, and Representative Cultures are defined and described. The utilization of seed stocks and working stocks is described and illustrated. Literature sources for the correct naming of microbial species are cited, and names plus locations are given for the major culture collections of microbial germplasm world wide. References are given for quality control and Good Manufacturing Practice. |
