Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The advent of molecular biology has provided many new tools for fungal taxonomists. In this review, a number of DNA methodologies used by taxonomists are discussed, including: restricition fragment length polymorphisms; variable number tandem repeats; microsatellites; and a number of methods based on the use of the polymerase chain reaction. Recent applications of these methods in identification of fungal plant pathogens are provided. The advantages and disadvantages of molecular applications in vivo versus in vitro are discussed, as are the limitations of molecular applications in plant pathology.
