Interpretive Summary: The first record of Stelis from southern Africa is described as Stelis rozeni. The systematic position of this distinctive species, that does not fit any recognized subgenera, is discussed. Comparisons are made to the rare subgenus Malanthidium.

Technical Abstract: The parasitic bee genus Stelis and its relationship to the pollen-collecting bees that it parasitizes are not well known. Many species are known from Eurasia and North America but the genus has not been known from the southern hemisphere. We describe as a new species the first member of this parasitic genus to be recorded from the southern half of Africa and compare it to other megachilid bees with similar remarkable distributions.
