Technical Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is an important pathogen of cattle in the United States with losses thought to be between 35 and 56 million dollars per million calves born. This abstract details a presentation made to the Academy of Veterinary Consultants. The presentation was an overview of recent developments in detection and control of BVDV. Topics covered were BVDV biotypes, outcome of infections, the problems that BVDV causes in the field, variation in virulence among BVDV strains, and more effective prevention measures.
