Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: An example of free sharing of materials, knowledge, and data, for cooperation among genetics research scientists, was set in motion by maize research workers as early as 1918. The concrete manifestation of this ideal was, and is, the Maize Genetics Cooperation News Letter, initiated by R. A. Emerson of Cornell University in 1929 and continuing today in its 75th year. This paper is an historical summary of the origin and development of the News Letter and of the continuing cooperation associated with it.
