Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Insects, like all animals, produce specific proteins in response to stressful conditions. Using cDNA libraries made from the glassy-winged sharpshooter, GWSS, scientist at the U.S. Horticultural Research Laboratory in Ft. Pierce, Florida, identified the genes being expressed in GWSS during hot summer conditions in southern California. The expressed sequence tags (ESTs), can be used to scan for and tag active genes, ESTs are an important tool for identifying and isolating functional genes in insects. Several Heat Shock proteins were isolated and identified from GWSS adults. Further studies on the expression of these proteins in response to temperature stress will advance our understanding of how the GWSS deals with extreme temperatures.
