Interpretive Summary: Many species of soldier flies are beneficial to agriculture because the larvae help to decompose plant material, although a few species are known to attack living plants, such as grass roots, including wheat crops. The information contained in this publication provides a number of taxonomic changes to soldier flies based on original research, as well as updates the recently published world catalog (2001). This publication will be extremely valuable to other scientists as well as regulatory personnel charged with keeping pest insects out of the U.S. because it brings up to date a compendium of basic data on the entire family.

Technical Abstract: Numerous taxonomic changes in generic and specific taxa of Stratiomyidae (Soldier flies) are made based on examination of type material. The world catalog of Woodley (2001) is updated with new data entries for all taxa described up to April 2005. A section is also included that corrects some errors from the 2001 catalog.
