Effect of milk supplementation with lactobacillus brevis 1e1 on jejunal gene expression [abstract]. Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Conference. 20(5):A1057

Technical Abstract: Lactobacillus brevis (1E1) fed in a milk supplement during lactation can improve body weight gain and feed intake, and decrease activation of the gut immune system in the young pig at weaning. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of milk supplementation with 1E1 on gene expression in the gastrointestinal tract of pigs. Litters were allotted to two treatments at birth: 1) control milk supplement and 2) milk supplement with 1E1. Gene expression levels were determined using quantitative real-time PCR. Supplementing pigs with 1E1 during the lactation period decreased the expression of several genes within the jejunum involved in the Toll-like receptor pathway, specifically SARM, TIRP, TLR4, TRAF6, and TLR9 while increasing the gene expression of IFN-g at weaning. Gene expression levels of genes involved in mucin production, TH2 response, and tolerance were not affected by 1E1 supplementation. These data suggest that supplementation of 1E1 to pigs prior to weaning alters the expression of genes involved in immunological function within the jejunum.
