Technical Abstract: The whitefly Bemisia tabaci is a threat to many sub-tropical and tropical agricultural crops grown worldwide. The threat is primarily due to devastating Begomoviruses vectored by this phloem feeding insect. As part of a collaborative Whitefly EST genomics project, greater than 19,000 EST sequences were generated from adult B Biotype B. tabaci that were either aviruliferous or viruliferous for one of two begomoviruses: Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) or Tomato mottle virus (ToMoV). These two viruses represent whitefly vectored plant pathogenic viruses that are either transcriptionally active (TYLCV), or not (ToMoV) within this insect vector. Virtual northern analysis indicated Begomoviruses induced changes in transcript abundance from genes that encode proteins involved in cellular microfilament function, membrane transport, egg development, protein translation and immunity. Comparative response of transcripts related to these processes will be presented for both TYLCV and ToMoV viruliferous whiteflies.
