Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. Paper No. 12. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Development of new applications for surplus crops is one of the major objectives of research at USDA. A variety of new applications are being explored for starches, proteins, carbohydrates, and vegetable oils which are major ingredients of surplus crops such as corn, soybean, wheat, barley, etc. Among the applications that are intensely being investigated include lubrication, which is currently almost exclusively dominated by petroleum-based products. In this presentation, investigation into the tribological properties of seed oils will be discussed. Seed oils are functional fluids because they are both polar and liquid at ambient temperature. As a result, they have the potential to be employed in lubrication applications occurring in all lubrication regimes: boundary, hydrodynamic, elastohydrodynamic, and mixed film. |
