Technical Abstract: The United States Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service, in cooperation with University of Wisconsin Madison, announces the release of 'Kura1' a kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum) germplasm. This population was developed cooperatively by University of Wisconsin Madison agronomist Kenneth A. Albrecht and US Dairy Forage Research Center (USDA-ARS) research geneticist Heathcliffe Riday. 'Kura1' is a autohexaploid (2n=6x=48) rhizomotous Trifolium ambiguum with white flowers and a delta shaped leafmark. This germplasm is a genetically broad based selection for increased sward density and ability to spread rhizomotously in a Southern Wisconsin environment. This material represents the cycle 1 population based on 69 parental plants from the following sources: ARS2678 (6); Cossack (2); Endura (3); KZ4 (4); MS Persist (1); MS670 (1); NSL86671 (1); ORSyn2 (2); PI258788 (1); PI405122 (1); PI405123 (1); PI427121 (3); PI427122 (3); PI440672 (1); PI440676 (1); PI440678 (1) PI440679 (1); PI440682 (1); PI440683 (1) PI440685 (1); PI440686 (1); PI440689 (1); PI440693 (1); PI440695 (2); PI440697 (1); PI440700 (3); PI440712 (1); PI604700 (1); PI604720 (2); PI604743 (1); PI604756 (3); PI604757 (1); PI631896 (1); PI 631899 (1); unknown (7); and WISC1 (5). Cycle 0 plants were space planted in 4/21/1999 at the UW-Agricultural Research Station in Arlington, WI and selections made during 2000. Selections were based increased sward density and ability to spread rhizomotously. Selected plants were space planted September 2001 and allowed to open pollinate during the 2004 growing season. Halfsib seed was harvested in autumn 2004 from individual space plants. Equal amounts of seed were bulked from each of the 69 parents to form the cycle 1 syn1 seed Syn 1 seed of 'Kura1' is maintained by USDA-ARS and 100 seed quantities will be provided upon request to Heathcliffe Riday (riday@wisc.edu), US Dairy Forage Research Center, USDA-ARS, 1925 Linden Drive West, Madison, WI 53706. Genetic material of this release has been deposited in the National Plant Germplasm System where it will be available for research purposes, including development and commercialization of new varieties/cultivars. We request that appropriate recognition be made of the source when this germplasm contributes to a new cultivar. U.S. plant variety protection will not be requested for 'Kura1'.
