Interpretive Summary: Listeria monocytogenes is a serious foodborne pathogen with a high fatality rate. In this chapter the current methods to enrich L. monocytogenes and differentiate it from other members of the genus Listeria are reviewed. Only phenotypic methods for identification are covered in the chapter. This includes various media and biochemical and immunological methods for identification.

Technical Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes is a serious foodborne pathogen that has a high fatality rate. It can contaminate many different types of foods. Some of the methods currently in use to detect and identify L. monocytogenes in foods are covered in this chapter. This includes various media and biochemical and immunological methods for identification.
