Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: USDA VetNet commenced in March 2004 with submission of Salmonella isolates and in December 2005, Campylobacter isolates were added to the program. The objectives of USDA VetNet are to determine PFGE patterns of Salmonella and Campylobacter isolates submitted to the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), to compare USDA VetNet and PulseNet PFGE patterns, and to use the comparative data for surveillance and investigation of food-borne illness outbreaks. In addition, these data will also assist at the farm level through study of clonal dissemination. All isolates for the Campylobacter database originate from broiler slaughter plants. Isolates were restricted with a single enzyme, SmaI, and data were analyzed using Bionumerics. The Campylobacter database currently has 635 isolates resulting in 381 unique PFGE patterns. Campylobacter coli account for 187 (29%) of the isolates and 126 (33%) of the unique PFGE patterns. The majority of the isolates, 448 (71%), are C. jejuni which represent 255 (67%) of the unique PFGE patterns. The most common pattern for C. coli (9 isolates, 5%) is DBBS16.0003 while the most common pattern for C. jejuni (13 isolates, 3%) is DBRS16.0002. Future objectives for VetNet include web based access to enable participants to view and submit patterns.
