In order to provide harmony, international protocols are cited where available. Important variables, such as the commodity, pest identity, test populations, most tolerant stage, rearing, holding, treatment, host material, criterion for efficacy and influence of treatment technology are discussed and solutions offered. Model research protocols are offered. Statistical analyses are discussed, as well as the submission of research results to regulatory agencies.
