Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Rapid detection of avian influenza (AI) virus and identification of the H5 and H7 subtypes is critical for wild bird monitoring programs. A real-time RT-PCR test for identification of the H7 subtype in North America was first reported in 2002. With the recent surveillance in wild birds it was discovered that the original test did not detect all H7 viruses. Therefore a new test was developed using the newly available H7 sequence. Here we report the development and initial evaluation of this new H7 subtype test with broader specificity for New World H7 subtype AI viruses.
