Interpretive Summary: Various new citrus varieties and rootstocks have recently become available or are pending release. Most are the products of breeding programs conducted by USDA, University of California, or University of Florida. Some are now available from the Repository as pathogen-tested materials but are not actually newly developed or released. In response to producer interest, this paper and its associated presentation review in a non-technical manner some of the more interesting of these new varieties and rootstocks.

Technical Abstract: Various new citrus varieties and rootstocks have been released in recent years or are nearing release. In addition, there are various other varieties that are not new but have been cleaned up and so are now newly available for propagative purposes. In the case of scion varieties, the emphasis has been on low-seeded, easy-to-peel mandarin types. However, some other types are also being developed. There are basically four sources of new varieties in the United States: the USDA citrus breeding program in Florida, the citrus breeding program of the University of California, the citrus breeding program of the University of Florida, and the cleanup of existing varieties by State or Federal programs. Availability of the new releases is variable, some being freely available and others being protected. In the case of protected varieties, the manner for diffusion is variable and in some cases still being developed. Some of the new releases are described in more detail.
