Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In this poster, we will describe the synthesis and structural characterizations of a benzyl-, nitrobenzyl-, and aminobenzyl celluloses. Nitrobenzyl- and aminobenzyl cellulose derivatives are synthesized by etherification process in lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide homogeneous solution. Nitrobenzylation was affected in 80% yield by treating a mixture of microcrystalline cellulose (20ìm), 4-dimethyl aminopyridine (DMAP) and 4-nitobenzyl chloride (4eq.) at 80 degree C for overnight. Nitro-benzyl cellulose was then reduced to amino-benzyl cellulose in 93% yield with indium metal in ethanol and saturated aqueous ammonium chloride. Also, we converted the poly (ethylene oxide) dibromide to poly (ethylene oxide) diazides and reacted to study cycloaddition polymerization with bisphenol-A dipropargyl ether to produce elastomers compatible with cotton. The cycloaddition process was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. In addition to the syntheses of the desired products their structural characterizations by FT-IR, CP/MAS 13C NMR, NMR (1H, 13C, 15N), DSC, and TGA methods will be shown.
