Interpretive Summary: Food security in quality and safety is of primary concern to the food industry. In order to ensure food security in food manufacturing operations automatic process control is needed. Automatic process control offers an approach to regulating and improving the process operations on a regular basis. This chapter overviews the concepts, the methods, and the systems of automatic process control for food industry, and project the future of automatic process control for food industry.

Technical Abstract: In order to ensure food security in food manufacturing operations automatic process control is desired. With the operation of the automatic process control systems the deviation of the controlled variables from the standards can be consistently perceived, adjusted, and minimized to improve the process operations on a regular basis. Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control has been widely used in food industry. Model-based control has been developed to improve the performance of the control systems in food industry. This chapter overviews the concepts, the methods, and the systems of automatic process control for food industry, and project the future of automatic process control for food industry.
