Technical Abstract: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Plant Exploration Program supports domestic and foreign plant germplasm explorations for a variety of crop species and their wild relatives. Seed collections and associated passport data are incorporated into the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) and are available online to bona fide users around the world. Astragalus filipes Torr. ex A. Gray (basalt milkvetch) is a legume that is widely distributed across semiarid rangelands in western North America and holds promise for rangeland revegetation. Research conducted with Astragalus filipes Torr. ex A. Gray (basalt milkvetch) at the USDA Agricultural Research Service's Forage and Range Research Laboratory at Logan, Utah, is given as an example of how seed collections are obtained and evaluated for eventual germplasm release.
