Interpretive Summary: Certain micro-fungi possess several very different appearances dependent on the environmental conditions. To date, the different appearances have been given different names, even though they are parts of the same species. This is different from all other organisms, where a single name is allowed for each species, even if it has different appearances in different stages of its life. In order to unify the naming system for all biology, and in order to make information retrieval easier by having only one name for each species, we propose changes to the rules for naming fungi in order to bring fungal naming systems into conformity with the naming systems for all other living organisms. Technical Abstract: The Amsterdam Declaration on Fungal Nomenclature was developed at a international symposium convened in Amsterdam on 19-20 April 2011 under the auspices of the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF). The purpose of the symposium was to address the issue of whether or how the current system of naming pleomorphic fungi should be maintained or changed now molecular data were becoming routinely available. The issue is urgent as mycologists currently follow different practices, and no consensus was achieved by a Special Committee appointed in 2005 by the International Botanical Congress to advise on the problem. The Declaration recommends the deletion of Article 59 from the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (with provisions to protect names that would otherwise then be endangered), proposes that the first author to select a name of a pleomorphic genus or species be followed, and suggests the establishment of a body to advise or rule on controversial cases. The Declaration also strongly endorsed the move towards the greater independence of mycological from botanical nomenclature, and favoured progress towards either the BioCode, or a MycoCode based on the Draft BioCode (2011) if progress towards the BioCode was delayed. In addition, the need to develop requirements for the naming of fungi known only from environmental sequence data was recognized, and a possible example of how that could be done is included as a basis for further debate. The International Committee on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) was regarded as the body that should be mandated to oversee and implement the Declaration. |
