Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Vision loss among the elderly is an important health problem. Approximately one person in three has some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65 [1]. Age-related cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma are the major diseases resulting in visual impairment and blindness in the aging US population. A healthy lifestyle is implicated in the decreased risk of all of these age-related eye diseases. Of particular interest is the possibility that nutritional counseling or intervention might reduce the incidence or retard the progression of these diseases. The aim of this chapter is to review the clinical and epidemiological evidence to support a role for nutrition in age-related eye diseases.
