Interpretive Summary: Yeasts associated with wood boring insects are of interest to biotechnologists because they may be able to convert wood products to biofuels. In this paper, a new yeast species named Ambrosiozyma oregonensis is described. Although the two known strains of this species are not from wood products, they are members of a genus of yeasts that is usually isolated from insect tunnels in trees and from rotted wood. Identification and phylogenetic placement of the species was from gene sequence analysis. In addition to the new species description, closely related species of the asexual genus Candida are transferred to Ambrosiozyma in accord with the recently approved International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. Following publication of the description of A. oregonensis, this new species will become available to biotechnologists for further study.
Technical Abstract: Ambrosiozyma oregonensis sp. nov. (NRRL Y-6106T = CBS 5560, type strain) is described from two strains, one isolated from a mountain stream in Oregon, USA, and a second (NRRL YB-4169) from an unknown substrate from Marion, Illinois, USA. The species forms four hat-shaped ascospores in each deliquescent ascus and appears to be homothallic. Abundant true hyphae are produced with some having apparent dolipore-like septa. Analyses of nuclear gene sequences for the D1/D2 domains of large subunit rRNA, small subunit rRNA, translation elongation factor-1a and subunits B1 and B2 of RNA polymerase II show the proposed new species to be distinct from other species of the Ambrosiozyma clade. Because of their placement in the Ambrosioszyma clade, Candida kashinagacola, C. llanquihuensis, C. maleeae, C. pseudovanderkliftii and C. vanderkliftii are reassigned to Ambrosiozyma as new combinations.
