Interpretive Summary: This paper presents the design, implementation, deployment, and application of the Land Management and Operations Database (LMOD). LMOD supports modeling applications for technical assistance and research objectives and will be used by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) field conservation planners to provide initial inputs to applications, models, and tools during the conservation planning process. Specifically, the LMOD foundational data store service supports: (1) preplanning analysis for Conservation Desktop applications, (2) data provisioning for mobile planning tools, (3) resource inventory decision support tools, (4) formulation, evaluation, and ranking of conservation system alternatives, and (5) calculation of conservation effects. LMOD is a part of a larger set of reference data bases supporting many of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) automated functions and systems. In addition, LMOD is supplemented with web services in a service oriented architecture providing seamless data access to both internal and external applications. To address research objectives within the realm of agro-ecosystem modeling, LMOD is an integrated part of the Landuse and Agricultural Management Practices web Service (LAMPS). LAMPS provides required spatially- and temporally-explicit input data about agricultural management operations to exploit LMOD information as input to field and watershed models.

Technical Abstract: This paper presents the design, implementation, deployment, and application of the Land Management and Operations Database (LMOD). LMOD is the single authoritative source for reference land management and operation reference data within the USDA enterprise data warehouse. LMOD supports modeling applications for technical assistance and research objectives and will be used by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) field conservation planners to provide initial inputs to applications, models, and tools during the conservation planning process. Specifically, the LMOD foundational data store service supports: (1) preplanning analysis for Conservation Desktop applications, (2) data provisioning for mobile planning tools, (3) resource inventory decision support tools, (4) formulation, evaluation, and ranking of conservation system alternatives, and (5) calculation of conservation effects. LMOD reference data includes template land management operation schedules and supporting information. LMOD is a part of a larger set of reference data bases supporting many of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) automated functions and systems.
