Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Water is a critical issue for sustainability of golf courses in urban areas. Rapid population growth and climate change have increased the necesssity for golf courses to be efficient users of water, and sometimes users of low quality, high salinity water. Our research has focused on determining which measures accurately reflect salt tolerance in turfgrasses, the extent of variation present in several common cool season turfgrasses for salt tolerance, and what genes are induced in tolerant varieties upon exposure to salt. We have observed consistent salt tolerance trends among Kentucky bluegrass lines, but other species must still be explored at a greater depth.
