Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: HiMag is an experimental tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreber) which was developed to counter the annual $15 to 45 million hypomagnesemia-death loss in cattle grazing fescue in the U.S. HiMag is a C-2 accession of M0-96 and Ky-31 parentage which was screened against rust and for high Mg and Ca concentration and high (Mg+CA)/K (mol). We evaluated yield and quality of HiMag relative to 7 other tall fescues grown on an irrigated calcareous soil near Kimberly, Idaho. HiMag and K- 31 were also grown on low and high fertility acid soils near Watkinsville, Georgia. Herbage samples were collected throughout 1992 and 1993. To date: HiMag has had higher Mg, Ca, and (Mg+Ca)/K than other entries and intermediate levels of P and K. HiMag contained about 20% greater Mg and (Mg+Ca)/K than KY-31 when grown either at Kimberly, Idaho or Watkinsville, Georgia. Dry matter yields of HiMag were similar to those of K-31 grown at high fertility at both sites, but may be less than KY-31 when grown at low fertility in Georgia.
