Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Crop sequences arranged to require the fewest tillage operations for a complete cropping cycle have been shown to be the best for reducing irrigation-induced erosion. Generally, these sequences include no-till corn or cereal following legumes that have been in place for two or more years. Corn or cereal utilize much of the nitrate-N that is derived from the decomposing legume roots and nodules. This crop utilization of nitrate-N decrease the potential for nitrate-N leaching.
